I love this story! My grandfather was a country doctor who started his practice in the 1930’s. I looked through some of his medical notes, and saw a lot of references to things like cod liver oil, vitamins, and zinc. So few tools back then, but some common sense approaches like enough sunlight have really been eclipsed by all the high tech pharmaceuticals now. Thank you for sharing, and cheers to your good bones, achey as they are 😉

A tough post to write, even sort of trying to keep it simple ;)

I saw this too thank you!

So frustrating that correcting low levels does not fix all these associated problems. Good quote in the article:

“ Finding an association between vitamin levels and reduced risk is not the same as endorsing supplementation," Sexton pointed out. "Previous clinical trials of vitamin D supplementation to reduce dementia risk found mixed and varying results and had side effects. It is not recommended to start vitamin D supplementation to reduce dementia risk."

A good exercise in trying to expand on a simple topic but then narrow it down again. the recommendations for most medical things always seem so simplified, but we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg that led to the guideline! Thank you for a good history and explanation of the many gears in motion. I’ll get a little Sun, maybe take some vit d a couple times a week, and not stress or expect too much from it!

Glad you found a perfect take home point, and it’s justified

Here's an article I just read on vitamin D that you may find interesting. - https://www.peoplespharmacy.com/articles/too-little-vitamin-d-could-be-deadly?utm_source=The%20People%27s%20Pharmacy%20Newsletter&utm_campaign=f6c2caea6b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_12_09_04_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_7300006d3c-f6c2caea6b-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D

Also after reading your article, I switched from 2000 iu to 1000 - couldn't find 800. Happy to renew for the year.

A good article and thanks for sharing. They present a good run down on the associations of low vitamin d with health problems, but appropriately pull back from leaping to a conclusion about supplements curing the associated ills:

“ but the evidence keeps mounting that too little vitamin D can increase the risk for several serious health conditions. Unfortunately, the trouble lies in know whether supplements make a difference.”

Thanks for subscribing and for your support! I’ll keep them coming 😊 stop by again soon
