As a primary care physician, I provide education and counsel about problems and treatments… but ultimately I step back and listen to my patients’ preferences. I don’t have all the answers - far from it. And I don’t presume to know all the complex factors that go into someone’s unique decisions. But the relationships I am privileged to build with people, and the heroic journeys through problems large and small that I witness, all combine to make my job in primary care a calling.
Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with a special person who chose me as his family doc to record a podcast about the importance of primary care. The podcast host is a Senior Vice President at Independence Blue Cross, and is one of the most engaging, genuinely good people I’ve had the privilege of serving in my practice. We talk about the types of care family docs provide, how we can help with cancer prevention, and how a solid relationship with your primary care provider can provide a trusted home base. What really comes through in this podcast, I think, is the professional yet personal bond that exists between a doctor and patient. Despite all that’s fraying in healthcare, the core human connections that are made when we are vulnerable, sick, or just trying to be healthier still hold the fabric of our healthcare system together.
It is my strong advice that you listen to this podcast between Peter and me, and special guest Melinda :) Not quite as strong as my advice to quit smoking, but up there. I am really grateful for the opportunity this podcast gave me to reflect on my time as a family doctor, and I hope you like it, too. And as my first podcast, I don’t think I embarrassed myself too much.
Many sincere thanks to the team, and especially to Peter, for the good will, and for helping to spread a valuable message about the importance of primary care! IBX: The Cover Story podcast has other great monthly episodes, too. I subscribe and listen on my morning commute.
