Thank you, Ryan, for taking your daughter’s “King of Lasagna” story and running with it. I’m having lunch/dinner tomorrow with a small group of friends who enjoy talking about health stuff. I’m going to slip my thermometer in my purse as I leave the house and check my temp at those intervals you mentioned. My friends are fine with “weird” and I *love* being my own guinea pig!
Nice! I really did find this intriguing, too. If you do end up conducting this prospective trial with an n=1, please do let me know if you see a little bump in your temp after eating! I would like your friends if they are cool with weird ;)
Ryan, my temp went up slightly at 30 min (from 97.2 to 98.4), then it dropped at 60 min (95.3) and stayed in the 95-96 range after that. I don’t eat simple carbs (no stuffing and no dessert) so I may not be the best guinea pig for this experiment. My friends were intrigued. They also were pretty grossed out when I told them about the kid who ate an entire pan of lasagna.
Ha! Thanks for doing and sharing! The 11 plate feat did make for good dinner conversation especially when veering towards politics. My baseline was 97.8, thirty minutes after 2 plates it went up by 0.5, and then sixty minutes later up by 0.8 to 98.6, then drifting back to baseline after that. Our n=2 study will be published in NEJM next month 😉😁. Have a great weekend
Hi Arthur - I miss the days of the Turkey Trot.... "maybe next Thanksgiving" is what I've said for the past 20 or so. Have a great run, and glad you found some interesting food for thought in this food themed post!
Thank you, especially for your inspiring thoughts and health and thankfulness in spite of whatever we are dealing with...including feelings about the state of the world. I enjoy and learn from all your posts. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you Theresa, especially for acknowledging mutual feelings about the sorry state of the world. Hoping for more peaceful times and more cooperative actions. Happy Thanksgiving!
In mutual pursuit of joy, goodness and kindness with you Mim. Though it's often a struggle there is much left out there to discover and cultivate. Take good care this Thanksgiving and beyond :)
Very interesting stuff! I've had horses for over half a century. I was taught as a child that that eating raises body temperature, so we routinely feed them extra forage when the weather is cold and wet. It keeps them warmer than a blanket. Makes sense that the same would apply to humans.
So interesting CBA, thank you for sharing. This would be a really interesting post regarding animals and thermogenesis. I'll have to suggest this to the DVM I follow here on Substack, great idea. Happy Thanksgiving, and long live the love of science!
Best wishes to you and yours for a very happy—and healthy—Thanksgiving.
And the same back to you and yours Susan, thank you :)

Ryan, Thank you for you and all the great posts this year! Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you for the great commentary and goodwill, Donna. Happy Thanksgiving to you, too :)
It's an interesting piece today.
Ryan, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
I'll run a 5K Turkey Trot to support a local school and a Girls on the Run group.

And may we do everything we possibly can to find joy, do good, and be kind.
Happy Thanksgiving, Dr. Ryan, to you, your family and loved ones, and your readers.

I spent the better part of Wednesday cooking and getting geared up for today's festa, no lasagna though.
I doubt I'll remember to take my temperate though I will, without a doubt, remember to sing along with Arlo at noon on XPN.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
You can get anything you want
